Swimming Details
Although it may be tempting to take a dip in the Ohe'o Gulch pools, swimming is highly discouraged in the Kipahulu area of the park. Not only does water quality vary, but there's also the risk of violent and sudden flash floods, as well as rock falls, which can occur in the stream at any time. Be cautious if you do decide to swim, comply with signs and listen to the advice of park staff. Keep in mind that if an accident does occur, it can take up to 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive at Kipahulu. Never swim in pools above the park's waterfalls; flash floods can occur without warning and quickly sweep swimmers over the falls and to their deaths, as had occurred all too often in the past. Similarly, swimming in the pool at the bottom of the Waimoku Falls (at the end of the Pipiwai Trail carries the risk of being hit by debris carried by flash floods over the 400-foot falls.
