Skywatching and Stargazing Details
Haleakala National Park offers a superlative spot for skywatching and stargazing, day and night. There are several overlooks inside the park, and the visual horizon in many places in the summit area is up to 115 miles out to sea. Even cloudy skies can offer amazing sights including rainbows, "moonbows," and halos that sometimes appear around your shadow. Haleakala also offers a great, high perch from which to watch the planets, stars, and moon after dark. Visitors can rent a pair of 10x50 or 7x50 binoculars at one of the island's dive or sport fishing shops, and then pick up a star map at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center or the Haleakala Visitor Center. The park is open 24 hours a day, and light pollution at the summit is minimal.
