Ranger Led Programs Details

There are many regularly scheduled ranger-led programs within Haleakala. The weekly Waikaomi Cloud Forest guided hike is quite popular, but note that it's been suspended until further notice in order to reduce the potential introduction of a plant disease called "Rapid 'Ōhi'a Death. The disease targets the 'ōhi'a tree, which provides habitat for some of the park's endangered forest birds. Each day at the summit there's a free guided hike or ranger talk, dependent on staffing, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., featuring either a 30-minute hike on Keonehe'ehe'e or Pa Ka'oao Trail. Interested guests should meet at the Haleakala Visitor Center for the hikes, which are less than .5-mile round trip. If the hike is unavailable, a park naturalist will offer a 15- to 20-minute interpretive talk at the Haleakala Visitor Center instead. Topics can include the park ecosystem, culture and the environment, plants, animals, geology and more. No reservations are needed for the hikes, although sturdy walking shoes, layered clothing, sunscreen, water and a hat are recommended.
