Pipiwai Trail Details
The Pipiwai Trail is one of the most interesting and rewarding hikes on Maui, passing through a towering bamboo forest and alongside two spectacular waterfalls as it gently climbs the slope of Haleakala from its Kipahulu trailhead. Mostly gentle, with some bridges, boardwalks, mud, and knotty tree roots to navigate, the Pipiwai Trail runs just a half-mile before you reach the overlook for 180-foot Makahiku Falls. It ends, satisfyingly, at the 400-foot Waimoko Falls, where the spray can cool you off for the return, downhill journey. Avoid standing directly under the waterfall, however: the piles of branches, rocks and other debris that have been carried over the falls by frequent flash floods should tell you why it's dangerous.
