Museums Details
The Park Headquarters Visitor Center, Haleakala Visitor Center, and Kipahulu Visitor Center all have small cultural and natural history exhibits. The Haleakala National Park museum also offers a rich resource to visitors, but you must call ahead if you'd like to see the collection since it is open by appointment only and only for research or educational purposes. The collection is divided into three main categories: natural history, cultural resources, and archives. The natural-history collection includes biological specimens and geological samples; the cultural resources include archeological, historical, and ethnographic objects and works of art; and the archives hold mostly documents and photographs about the history, development, and management activities of the park. Appointments are available from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (except on federal holidays; call (808) 572-4476 for more information. You'll need to complete a research application at least one week before visiting in order to view the collection.
