Magnetic Peak Details

Magnetic Peak looks a lot like Haleakala's numerous other cinder cones, except that the iron-based materials it ejected make it mildly magnetic -- enough to throw the compasses of passing hikers temporarily out of whack. The iron also accounts for the peak's rusty red color. Standing at 10,008 feet, Magnetic Peak is Haleakala's second-highest point; it sits right alongside the road to the summit.
