Hosmer Grove Details

You'll find the turn-off to Hosmer Grove a mile below the Park Headquarters Visitor Center. There's a short trail here through native shrubland, and it's home to at least four types of honeycreepers, which are native forest birds. The grove was created in 1927 when forester Ralph Hosmer imported tree species from around the world, hoping to create a timber industry. Only 20 of the 86 introduced species survived, and the ones that lived -- including Mexican weeping pine, Monterey pin and eucalyptus -- wreaked havoc on native plant species. Park botanists are currently reclaiming the area for native trees and shrubs, which visitors can see on a short, 0.5-mile trail. There's also a wheelchair-accessible picnic area, and the small parking lot here is the meeting place for the Waikamoi Preserve hikes led by park staff.
