Holua Cabin Details
The Holua Cabin is the easiest of the park's three wilderness cabin to reach; it sits at 6,940 feet in the shrubland near Ko'olau Gap, 3.7 miles along the Halemau'u Trail or 7.4 miles down Keonehe'ehe'e (Sliding Sands) Trail. Hikers staying here have access to the central wilderness area. There's also a backcountry campground here, and nearby is the park's colony of breeding, endangered Hawaiian petrels, or ua'u. Do not step off trail in this area, as you may do inadvertent damage to a bird or its burrow. There are three rustic wilderness cabins available via reservation for overnight stays in Haleakala National Park. The cabins are accessible only by trail, and each person is limited to a three-night stay per 30-day period, with a maximum of two nights in one cabin. The maximum group size allowed at the cabins is 12 people. Hikers can make reservations up to 180 days in advance at [www.recreation.gov](http://www.recreation.gov) or by calling 877-444-6777. Permits must be picked up at Headquarters Visitor Center between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the day of the hike. Each of the three cabins costs a flat fee of $75 per night, regardless of the party size. Each cabin features limited amenities such as pit toilets and water nearby, although it's not potable and must be filtered or treated before drinking. Each cabin also has a wood-burning stove with limited firewood, a two-burner propane stove, cooking utensils and dishes, and 12 padded bunks. There is no electricity in the cabins.
