The Haleakala Highway, also called Crater Road, begins in the town of Pukalani and winds up the side of Haleakala, with many switchbacks along the way. Plan ahead for the 27-mile drive — the last place to get gas before getting started is in Pukalani. The two-lane road is well maintained, and can get quite busy, especially as visitors try to make it to the summit for sunrise. Drivers should follow posted speed limits and watch for animals crossing the road, such as cows and the endangered nene goose. At mile marker 10, vehicles must stop at the booth to pay the entry fee for the national park; the Park Headquarters Visitor Center will be coming up to the right shortly thereafter. It's six miles further on to the Leleiwi Lookout, and the Haleakala Visitor Center is right after mile marker 20. There's a large parking lot here, but keep in mind that it does fill up early for sunrise. Past the visitor center the road continues to the Pu'u'ula'ula Summit at 10,023 feet, where there's another parking area that also fills up quickly for sunrise.
