FAQ Details

**How long will it take me to get to the Park?** It depends on which area of the park you want to visit. If you're going to the summit area from Kahului, it will take just over an hour to reach the entrance to the park, and another 30 minutes to drive to the 10,023-foot summit. If you're headed to the Kipahulu area from Kahului, it will take about three hours to drive. **When is sunrise or sunset?** See the NPS sunrise and sunset [page](http://www.nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/sunrise-and-sunset.htm) to answer this and other common sun-event questions. The Chimani Haleakala app also provides sunrise and sunset times for the summit area. **Can I ride my bike in the park?** Yes. Bicycles must stay on the paved roads, and are not allowed on any park trails. The downhill ride from the summit is popular, although it requires you to ride cautiously and it's a one-way trip, so you'll need to a ride at one end of the trip or the other. **When is the park open?** The park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, although the visitor centers do have standard operating hours. Check the listings for specifics. **Where are the Seven Sacred Pools?** Although this is one of the most common questions received in the park, it is difficult to answer because they don't actually exist, and never have. Some old guidebooks and misinformed tour guides may reference this place name, but they are really referring to the freshwater pools at 'Ohe'o Gulch in the coastal Kipahulu Area of the park. There are many more than seven pools, and all freshwater is considered sacred in Hawaii, where freshwater is the source of life. **Is there lodging in the park?** There are two drive-up campgrounds, two backcountry campsites, and three backcountry cabins. **What address can I program into my GPS for the park?** The park does not have a "real" physical address, although the addresses below may work in your GPS. Summit Area entrance: 30,000 Haleakala Hwy, Kula, HI 96790 Add 10 miles to this. Kipahulu Area entrance: Mile Marker 42 Hana Hwy, Hana, HI 96713
