Tybee Island Light Station And Museum Details

Located on the northeastern part of Tybee Island at the mouth of the Savannah River is this Georgias oldest and tallest lighthouse. The first structure was built in 1741, although it, along with several of its replacements, was destroyed during heavy storms, earthquakes, and Civil War battles. The 144-foot tower you see today was constructed in the late 1800s after the Civil War, although that too also went through major restorations over the next 100 years. Although the lighthouse is still used for navigation, it is also open to the public as a museum.
