Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island State Park Details

Sapelo Island is only 11 miles long and 4 miles wide making it Georgia's fourth largest barrier island that features an ever-changing undeveloped shore landscape of dunes and salt marshes. The Island was formerly home to Thomas Spalding who built the beginnings of what is now The Reynolds Mansion. The island and mansion suffered severe damage during the Civil War but was later restored in 1912. The state eventually became the owner of the plantation, and it is now open to the public for exploring, camping, and touring. The grounds offer picnicking opportunities and guests are allowed to swim, bike, fish, and hike along the beaches. There is also a small village at the end of the island, Hog Hammock, that is home to the ancestors of post-war settlers. Remnants of past structures like a post office, airplane runway, Sapelo Lighthouse, and the Reynolds Chocolate House Cottage can also be found throughout the area. For those seeking to stay overnight, there is a campground nestled under the plantations original large oak trees.
