Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Details

James Earl Carter, the most famous son of tiny Plains, Ga., grew up the son of a peanut farmer and became the 39th president of the United States and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Plains High School, where Carter met his future wife, Rosalynn (the valedictorian of the Class of 1944), is now the visitor center of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. Displays at the nearby Carter Boyhood Farm focus on the future president's early life (the house didn't have electricity until he was 14), while exhibits at the visitor center cover Carter's political campaigns and presidency. The Plains railroad depot, which served as Carter's headquarters during the 1976 presidential campaign, is also part of the park and features a display of campaign memorabilia. The Carters still live in Plains, and the former president occasionally teaches Sunday School at the Maranatha Baptist Church.
