Fort Pulaski National Monument Details
This fort on Cockspur Island in the Savannah River was built in the 1820s to defend the key southern port city of Savannah, Georgia; in the Civil War, it was the site of a landmark battle between Confederate and Union forces that featured the first use of rifled cannon. The test was a success: the walls of the fort came down under concentrated cannon fire, spelling the beginning of the end of such brick fortifications. The battle is detailed in a film shown regularly in the visitor center; visitors can also tour the restored fort as well as hike a network of trails on Cockspur Island and view the 1849 Cockspur Island Lighthouse.
