Wildlife Details
If you're visiting the Everglades to see wildlife, the best time to come is during the dry season, mid-December to mid-April. The dry, cool conditions usually drive away pesky mosquitoes and biting flies, and low water levels encourage wildlife to gather at a few remaining water holes. Birding is also best in the dry season, as many different species spend their winters in the Florida sun. Plan on seeing many different types of amphibians, fish, manatees, gators, deer, a ton of birds, and even the occasional flamingo here and there. The Everglades really are a birding paradise (there are over 350 species of birds that have been spotted in the park) and a haven for those looking to see aquatic wildlife --- crocs and gators included. The rarest animals to see include the Everglades' most endangered inhabitant, the Florida panther, of which about 80 still survive. Other mammals you may come across include the West Indian manatee, which is also endangered, and the bottlenose dolphin.
