From 1850 to 1890, the Everglades were being considered to be drained and replanted with sugar in order to bolster Florida's economy. In the 1930s, the Herbert Hoover dike was built around Lake Okeechobee in order to prevent flooding. While it worked to prevent flooding, it cut off the water supply to the Everglades. Woops. In the 1940s, write Marjory Douglas began to study the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades. In 1947, she published the acclaimed book, "The River of Grass," which described the Everglades in great detail, attracting tourists and scientists alike. On December 13, 1989, President George H. W. Bush signed the Everglades National Park Protection and Expansion Act, which added 109,506 acres to the eastern side of the park. Just a few years later in 2000, there was a federal mandate put in place to restore the Everglades, called the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). Its mandate is the "restoration, preservation and protection of the south Florida ecosystem while providing for other water-related needs of the region". More recently, there have been numerous mentions of the Everglades in the news for gator vs. python fights. If you're lucky enough to see this in real life, make sure to bring the video camera - it might go viral. Check out this NatGeo article from 2005 on a python that burst after trying to swallow a gator whole. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/10/1006_051006_pythoneatsgator.html
