The Wilderness Waterway Details
The Wilderness Waterway stretches 99 miles from east to west from Everglades City to Flamingo, taking you to where the grassy marshes of the Everglades meet the ocean. If you want a paddling trip for the ages, this voyage is for you. Allow for somewhere between 4.5 and 9 days to complete the waterway in its entirety. The route takes you through untouched mangrove forests. There are many campsites to choose from, allowing for endless flexibility in terms of daily paddling distances. You can stay in a chickee (an elevated, freestanding platform with a roof), a ground site, or a beach site. Make sure to bring a map and be aware of the weather, tide charts, and camping locations. You'll need a permit to camp. If you don't want to paddle the Wilderness Waterway in it's entirety, put in at any ramp along the 99-mile stretch and paddle out and back for as long as you like. The National Park Service has a detailed map with further information, restrictions, and regulations.
