Overview Details
This fragile ecosystem - the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. - is less than an hour's drive from the sprawl of Miami, yet its 1.5 million acres (about 20 percent of the original Everglades) shelters some of the most endangered species in North America, including manatees, American crocodiles, and the Florida panther. The South Florida location means lots of visitors: about a million people access the park from its entrances to the north, east, and west. The Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center, the park's main headquarters, is located at the east (Miami side) entrance. The park includes five tropical and subtropical habitats (hammock, mangrove, pineland, sawgrass, and slough) that provide sanctuary to 350 species of birds, 300 species of fish, 40 types of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles. Visitors can travel the 30-mile park road from the Coe Visitor Center to the shore of Florida Bay, hike or bike around the Flamingo village area or the 15-mile Tram Road through the park's famed "river of grass," or take a boat tour or kayak the Wilderness Waterway in the park's Gulf Coast area. Established: May 30, 1934 Area: 1,508,537 acres Website: [www.nps.gov/ever](http://www.nps.gov/ever)
