Monroe Station Details
After the Tamiami Trail was completed in 1928, six service stations were constructed along the remote stretch of road through Collier County (most of which is part of the Big Cypress Preserve today). Monroe Station is one of two that remain today, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Though it has been boarded up and abandoned since 2007, the building has a unique history: it was rumored to have been a hangout for Al Capone.
