Hole in the Donut Restoration Area Details
Before the Everglades were established as a National Park, heavy farming took place on land near what is now Paradise Key. Over 6,000 acres were farmed and then abandoned in the mid-1970s, leaving the land heavily disturbed. This allowed the growth of an aggressive, non-native species of plant called Brazilian pepper, which slowly but surely began to outcompete the native vegetation for resources. Because Brazilian pepper was growing in an area surrounded by native species, the name Hole in The Donut was coined. The Everglades, the National Park System, Miami-Dade County, and a few private organizations are working to restore the land and permanently remove the Brazilian pepper. Eventually, the land will be re-established as the prairie wetland it once was.
