Wildlife Details
Wildlife at Dry Tortugas consists of birds, land mammals and aquatic creatures. One of the most popular creatures that visitors seek to find are the two species of sea turtles that call the park home: green and loggerhead. If you're one of the lucky ones who spots a turtle, please keep your distance. Coral reefs and their aquatic inhabitants are another huge draw. Hundreds of species lie just below the water's surface, a wonderful viewing opportunity divers and snorkelers. Creatures you might see include tropical reef fish, sharks, octopus, lobsters and the American crocodile. Birders will enjoy visiting in spring or fall during common migration times. Close to 300 species of birds have been spotted at the park. These include frigates, sooty terns and pelagic seabirds or maybe even the rare White-tailed Tropicbird.
