History Details

Fort Jefferson was designated as a national monument in 1935, and the monument was redesignated as Dry Tortugas National Park in 1992. Established to protect the islands, their marine ecosystems and their cultural resources, the park has a rich history due to its location within a shipping channel that was used by Spanish explorers and merchants traveling from the Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico. Occasionally, vessels would catch on coral and become shipwrecked.
