Casemates Details

Casemates are the gunrooms that line all of Fort Jefferson. The fort was designed to hold 420 heavy cannons on all six sides, providing 360 degrees of protection, for all three levels of the fort. The guns faced the sea through embrasures, the large openings. The fort was never fully completed, so many of the casemates on the second tier became quartered both prisoners and soldiers.
