Bush Key Details
Bush Key is an undeveloped, subtropical island that offers unique opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking and paddling. The 16-acre land mass is home to birds that aren't found anywhere else in the continental United States including sooty terns and brown noddies, as well as to sea turtles. Humans are allowed on the island during daylight hours between October and January only. The island is closed to the public from February to September while the birds nest there and raise their offspring. Visitors to Bush Key are encouraged to walk along the island's shoreline trail, which is a one-mile round trip path. Stay on the trail to protect the plants. Bush Key is accessible by kayak or canoe. Coral reefs dot the waters surrounding the island, inhabited by sharks, lobsters, tropical fish and octopus.
