Tree and Plants Details
Hundreds of species of plants make their homes within the park, some of which are endangered. Mangrove trees line the islands and not only provide stabilization to the shorelines but serve as nurseries to fish and housing for birds. The endangered Sargent's Palm, considered the rarest Florida-native palm tree, is found within the park, as are rare semaphore prickly-pear cactus; botanists have found 570 of the plants on one island in Southern Biscayne Bay. A dozen different types of ferns are also found within the park, wildflowers often bloom, and then there are many types of seagrass and marine plants found below the water's surface.
