Jones Lagoon Trail Details
Birders will want to paddle the Jones Lagoon Trail, a premier birding destination in Biscayne National Park. You're sure to see brown pelicans, cormorants, and anhinga; a bird rookery is also in the lagoon, but paddlers must stay at least 300 feet away to avoid disturbing the birds. You may also spot sharks, rays, upside-down jellyfish, schools of fish, and wading birds within the lagoon. Time spent in the lagoon can easily range from six to 10 hours. Getting to Jones Lagoon isn't easy, though; it's advisable that you transport your canoe or kayak by motorboat to the Lagoon, and then start paddling. Boat anchorage points can be found to the north in the Jones Channel near Totten Key, and to the south near Manatee Creek.
