Fowey Rocks Lighthouse Details
Built between 1875 and 1878, the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse guides ships passing through the area's shallow waters; it stands 130 feet above water and is known as the "Eye of Miami." The now solar-powered light can be seen 17 miles out to sea. In addition to providing light to ships passing, this historic lighthouse provides landing pads for Brown Boobies and Brown Pelicans. In the spring, you may even spot migrating Peregrine Falcons, and look up to see magnificent Frigate Birds. Under the water's surface is where the lighthouse really shines for snorkelers and SCUBA divers, though. The lighthouse is the newest addition to the Biscayne National Park Maritime Heritage Trail but strays from the trail's typical shipwreck theme: fish thrive around the lighthouse's iron pilings and are easily spotted on dives in the area.
