Lugano Shipwreck Details
In addition to carrying cargo valued at more than $1 million, the _Lugano_ was also carrying 116 passengers en route from England to Havana, Cuba when it sank in 1913. On March 9, 1913, the iron-hulled cargo steamship grounded on Long Reef; all of the passengers -- mostly Spanish immigrants -- were safely rescued from the ship. Open-water certified SCUBA divers can dive down 30 feet and explore the remains of the _Lugano_, including the stern, stanchion, crankshaft, and bow. The Lugano is part of the Biscayne National Park Maritime Heritage Trail.
