Horseback Riding Details
Saddling up in Rocky Mountain National Park isn't just about horses: mules, ponies, llamas, and burros are also permitted, just as they have been since the park was established in 1915. Eighty percent of the park's trails -- over 260 miles -- are open to horseback riders and pack animals, and stock are permitted at the park's backcountry campgrounds, too. There are two stables inside the park, Glacier Creek Stables and Moraine Park Stables, which offer guided trail rides to visitors as well as services for those who bring their own animals. Sombrero Stables and Aspen Lodge Stables in nearby Estes Park, Colo., stay open in the wintertime. Stock animals must stay on marked trails and off most roads in the park, and also are prohibited in park drive-in campgrounds and picnic areas. For a full list of riding rules and regulations, see the [park website](https://www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/horses.htm).
