Elk Details
Approximately 600-800 elk now winter in Rocky Mountain National Park, an impressive figure when you learn that there were none remaining here in 1900 after being hunted into oblivion. Large park meadows, including Horseshoe Park, Moraine Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Harbison Meadow and Holzwarth Meadow are great places to look for elk, which come here to mate each fall -- a ritual that often includes aggressive battles between rival bull elk, complete with challenging "bugle" calls.
