Montezuma Valley Overlook Details
A spectacular spot to watch the sunset on the main park road! When looking out at this overlook, the sheer cliff to the north is known as the Knife Edge. There is an old road that used to loop around Knife and back to Morefield Canyon. This road was difficult to maintain so it was abandoned in 1957, and replaced by a tunnel to connect Prater and Morefield Canyons. A view to the west is the city of Cortez, which lies on a flat erosion plain underlain by Dakota Sandstone. This windblown silt, also known as loess, holds moisture really well. Continuing the view to the west sits the Sleeping Ute Mountain.
