Point Lookout Trail Details
Starting and ending at Morefield Campground near the Amphitheater, this strenuous 2.2 mile round-trip hike takes you up 500 feet within a half-mile via a series of switchbacks to Point Lookout and then traverses the mesa top for absolutely spectacular views of Montezuma and Mancos Valleys. There are claims that Point Lookout was used as a signaling point by the U.S. Cavalry. The prominent point towers high above the entrance to the park. It most likely was used for the same purpose by the early inhabitants of the area. To stabilize the trail, rocks and logs were used to reinforce the edges. A unique characteristic of the Point Lookout is a collection of initials inscribed on the rocks. You will find some include dates, but the mystery is to guess which century the two-digits refer to.
