Hiking Details
Hikers can enjoy a variety of terrain and trails, from the sandy peaks of the dunes to the alpine terrain beyond the dune fields. The park centers on a 30-square-mile day-use area that is mostly sand dunes. This is the most popular destination for those looking to explore without going too far. The dunes do not have trails, so you can walk and explore every inch if you'd like. Five of the dunes in the park are over 700 feet tall, and a climb is a great opportunity to gain scenic vistas of this vast, sandy world. If you're looking to walk on solid ground, you can enjoy one of Great Sand Dunes National Park's many forested trails. These are also a good option for afternoon activities in the summer and fall, when the sand temperatures can get uncomfortably hot. Check out the shorter Montville Nature Trail or Mosca Pass Trail. If you're looking for a challenge, check out the longer Sand Ramp Trail. The park also offers a few alpine trails, including a trail to the summit of Mt. Herard (which offers amazing panoramic views of the dunes.) Some of the trails may be blocked by snow as late as June, so call or check with a ranger before heading out. The least popular area of the park are the grasslands that surround the dunes. Enjoy migrating dunes, wildlife, mountain views, and the beauty of the high desert with a hike here.
