Dunefield Details
The 30 square miles of dunes in the park are estimated to contain over 5 billion cubic meters of sand. The mass of sand is stabilized by consistent southwesterly and northeasterly winds, creeks that deposit sand back into the field, and a 7-percent moisture content below the dry surface. There are no designated trails in the dune field, so you can explore every inch of the sand if you wish, from 750-foot dunes to deep depressions. If visiting in the summer, plan to check out the dunes in the earlier mornings or evenings, as sand surface temperature can reach up to 150 degrees in the heat of the day. There are sand-friendly wheelchairs available to loan at the Visitor Center. You can camp on the dunes anywhere in the 30-square-mile dune field outside of the designated day-use area.
