Plan Around Camping
A good stop is not just something to read about. Once it belongs on the day, move into a saved trip and build the route around it.
Use this detail page to confirm that the stop is worth it, then carry that decision into a trip draft while the park context is still fresh.
Camping Details
There is only one campground in Great Sand Dunes National Park, and that is the Pinon Flats Campground. It is open from April to October, and has 88 campsites plus three group sites. The campground is equipped with flush toilets, sinks, and a dishwashing sink. Each site has a fire grate and a picnic table. Campsites are limited to maximum of eight people, three tents, and two vehicles. Pets are allowed as long as they are leashed. Firewood is available at the Visitor Center and at the Oasis Store just outside the park entrance: you may not collect firewood inside the park. There are no hookups for RVs, and note that RVs longer than 35 feet may have a hard time turning and fitting in the campground. Loop 1 sites can be booked 24 hours a day at the self-registration kiosk, whereas Loop 2 sites must be booked at least four days in advance. These sites can get busy, especially in early summer, so plan ahead. All sites (in Loop 1 and Loop 2) cost $20 per night. Group Sites can be booked on [recreation.gov](http://www.recreation.gov) up to one year in advance. There are several other area campgrounds that are located outside the park: - Oasis Campground: just outside the park entrance; 90 sites total. 719-378-2222. - Zapata Falls Campground: a primitive campground on Bureau of Land Management land, located 11 miles south of the park visitor center. $11 per night. - San Luis State Park: 15 miles west of Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center. 800-678-2267 for reservations; 719-378-2020 for ranger station in summer. - Sand Dunes Swimming Pool and Campground: A privately owned campground about 30 miles west of the visitor center and two miles north of Hooper, Colo. Open year-round: 719-378-2807. - KOA Alamosa: 34 miles from Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center, four miles east of Alamosa. Open in the warmer months only: 719-589-9757.
