Backpacking Details

The most popular option for those looking to spend a night in the high desert of Great Sand Dunes National Park is to camp overnight on the dunes. Camping is only permitted outside of the day-use area, which requires a minimum 1.5-mile hike. Camping is best when the weather is calm to avoid blowing sand. Remember that you must acquire a backcountry permit in order to camp in the park. Permits are free and can be obtained at the Visitor Center from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m in the summer, and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m in the fall, winter and spring. Permits are not available in advance. Hikers can also camp in the woods on Mosca Pass or along the Sand Ramp Trail between the dune field and the mountains. These sites have great views and shade, but are primitive and sometimes close to a mile from water. Sites are limited to one party and six campers per site. Sites are all first-come, first-served. You can also camp in the Sand Dunes National Preserve. You only need a permit to camp in the preserve (which is a federally designated wilderness area) if you plan on entering the preserve via the park.
