In 1914, a dispute between the Colorado National Guard and a coal mining settlement erupted into a violent battle due to a strike, killing 21 people (including women and children). This attack was known as the Ludlow Massacre. A truce was declared and the United Mine Workers of American purchased the property, erecting this memorial to commemorate the lives that were lost during the attack.
