Winter Activities
Winter brings fewer visitors, a serene landscape, and the chance for outdoor activities.
Plan Around Winter Activities
A good stop is not just something to read about. Once it belongs on the day, move into a saved trip and build the route around it.
Use this detail page to confirm that the stop is worth it, then carry that decision into a trip draft while the park context is still fresh.
Winter Activities Details
Winter brings an abundance of snow to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, with totals exceeding eight feet each winter since the mid-2010s. Both North Rim and East Portal Roads are closed in winter, and South Rim Drive is closed beyond the Visitor Center. As South Rim Drive is unplowed, it's ideal for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and even camping (beyond Pulpit Rock Overlook). Be courteous to other users by not snowshoeing or walking through ski tracks, and be aware of the weather, your provisions and gear, and your own abilities. Note that the Inner Canyon is closed during winter.
