Tree and Plants Details
Some 547 species of plants grow in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Wildflowers make up a significant number of these plants, and if you arrive at the right time -- they bloom anytime from early spring through fall, though the best blooms are in spring -- you can find pockets and patches of color in different locations in the park. Several species of trees call the park home. On the canyon rim, you'll find gambel oak and serviceberry growing, and in the canyon you can find cottonwood, Douglas fir, and box elder in the shade. Be on the lookout for one of the canyon's most common and reviled plants, poison ivy: the three-leaved, rash-inducing vine loves growing here, and does so in profusion.
