Painted Wall truly is one of the more remarkable sights in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This near-vertical wall is fissured and cracked from top to bottom, making it a favorite place for rock climbers and for nesting birds, but it gets its name from the colors 'splattered' across its face by patches of lichen, bits of vegetation, and the streaks and striations of rocks. The trail to the overlook is another short, easy one, and if you took in the sights from Chasm View, on the east side of this oxbow in the river, you can see the difference in the canyon's look and feel over a short distance. This can be an interesting place to watch the sun rise or set as well.
