Operating Hours Details

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers a unique and dramatic natural landscape, accessible throughout the year with some seasonal limitations due to weather conditions. The park is divided into two main sections, the North Rim and South Rim, along with the East Portal, which falls within the Curecanti National Recreation Area but is accessible from the South Rim. The South Rim is the more developed side, providing a range of recreational activities. It's important to note that vehicle access to South Rim Road is open from early April to mid-November, allowing visitors to reach Gunnison Point and other areas by car. During the winter months, this road is open to Gunnison Point, with the rest of the road available for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing due to limited vehicle access. The North Rim Road and East Portal Road are both closed from late November to mid-April, reflecting the park's approach to preserving the natural environment and visitor safety during harsh winter conditions. Despite these closures, the South Rim Campground remains available year-round, offering a unique opportunity for winter camping. The North Rim Campground operates from April to mid-November, and the East Portal Campground from May to mid-October, catering to visitors during the warmer months. Visitor centers adapt to seasonal changes as well. The South Rim Visitor Center is open daily, excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas, with hours extending in the summer and reducing slightly from November 1 to April 23. The North Rim Ranger Station, open intermittently during the summer, provides a self-pay station for entrance fees and a self-registration board for wilderness permits, ensuring that visitors can access necessary information and permits even when the station is unstaffed. It's essential for visitors to plan their trip according to these seasonal operations to fully enjoy what Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has to offer.
