Kneeling Camel View Details
Kneeling Camel is the last viewpoint along the North Rim Road and offers a pullout where you can check out the Kneeling Camel pegmatite in the canyon below. Use your imagination to picture the rock as a camel with one hump staring across to the South Rim (it's very easy to make out). Beyond the camel you can see Gunnison Point (also a pegmatite) standing tall on the South Rim. Pegmatites are found throughout the canyon and are most commonly seen as stripes on the sides of the cliffs. They are igneous rocks (formed by pressure) and usually composed of quartz, feldspar and mica -- very similar to granite. If you are hoping for a photo of the camel, plan to arrive later in the afternoon, as the morning shadows significantly limit its definition. After you finish examining the camel, you can stroll (or drive) about .1 miles down along the road to a turnaround. Here, you'll find the site of the original North Rim Ranger Station and restrooms. You can also access the Dead Horse Trail 300 feet down from Kneeling Camel on the lefthand side of the road.
