Gunnison Point Overlook Details

Perched over a long, gentle curve in the Gunnison River, Gunnison Point offers some spectacular views of the canyon. Far below, you'll see the river and its twisted course -- yes, it zig zags even when the map shows you a curve or straight line -- glittering away at the bottom of the canyon. On the canyon walls you can see millions of years of history exposed in the beautifully striated rock walls and the sharp pinnacles of smaller fins and peaks of rock. Parking is plentiful, and the South Rim Visitor Center is adjacent. Gunnison Point also marks the north end of the Rim Rock Trail, which runs to the South Rim Campground. In winter, the road to Gunnison Point and the visitor center is open, but beyond the visitor center the road is unplowed and open only to skiers and snowshoers.
