Hiking Details

There are a number of hiking options within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park that will appeal to hikers of different ability and confidence levels. Along the South Rim, the Cedar Point Nature Trail and Rim Rock Nature Trail offer easy wilderness access, while Oak Flat Loop and Warner Point Nature Trail are more rugged. On the North Rim, you'll find longer hikes like the three-mile North Vista to Exclamation Point hike, the seven-mile North Vista to Green Mountain hike, and the five-mile Deadhorse Trail. Experienced hikers only should venture into the Inner Canyon. Before you strike off into the wilderness, know that these trails are neither maintained nor marked, and routes can be very difficult to follow. If you head into the Inner Canyon, prepare for the chance of having to "self-rescue" and get yourself out of a jam. Be aware that poison ivy grows like mad along the river -- and some plants grow five feet or taller. No pets or small children are allowed on Inner Canyon hikes. Permits are free and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis; arrive early to ensure you get yours.
