East Portal Road Details

If you want to see the Gunnison River without hiking the Inner Canyon, drive East Portal Road. This road isn't for the faint of heart. It's filled with hairpin turns and has a very steep -- 16 percent -- grade. Vehicles longer than 22 feet (including trailer) are prohibited. It is a lovely drive though, and provides access to the river access and to the Curecanti National Recreational Area.
