Deadhorse Trail Details
This trail travels through the North Rim uplands to a high, undeveloped overlook of Deadhorse Gulch, East Portal, and the Gunnison River. The trail leaves from the trailhead at Kneeling Camel Overlook, and wanders over level, brushy ground past an old corrugated-steel ranger station. The trail, which can be overgrown in areas, is actually an abandoned access road that leads past a rare spring-fed pond. Next, the trail begins its first and only major ascent, over a gentle, sage-covered hillside. The trail soon comes to a stock fence, and then runs south, following the fence a short distance to the viewpoint over the river. From here, backpackers have the option of continuing on the longer Deadhorse Gulch Trail, or traveling beyond and into the designated Wilderness Area.
