Backcountry Information Details

Nearly every inch of the 30,750-acre Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is backcountry, so be prepared for some rugged landscape. Yes, there are trails designed for the average visitor, but expert hikers and outdoorsy types in excellent physical condition (and with great route-finding, navigation, and map-reading skills) choose to take to the backcountry. A free permit is required for all backcountry and wilderness use, whether it's a day hike or overnight trip, and that includes hiking the inner canyon, going off established trails, any and all river use, and rock climbing. There are a limited number of permits and they're distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early to ensure that you get one. The Inner Canyon is a backcountry area where many experienced hikers choose to explore. Here you won't find any marked (or maintained) trails, and routes can be difficult to follow. If you head into the heart of the canyon, come prepared for self-rescue. Backcountry camping comes with the typical warnings: store food properly so bears and other wildlife can't get to it or you, don't harass the wildlife, bring plenty of water, and practice Leave No Trace principles. Wildlife here includes black bears and mountain lions, both of which are seldom seen and even less frequently encountered. No fires are permitted in the backcountry. If properly equipped, you can explore here in winter. Be aware that snowfall in the park is significant, with accumulation totals exceeding eight feet regularly since the 2010s. For winter exploration, proper gear and expert knowledge in how to use it -- especially how to use it in self-rescue situations -- is paramount.
