Half Dome Permit Information Details

Hiking to the summit of Half Dome is an iconic adventure in Yosemite National Park, but it requires careful planning and obtaining permits. Here's what you need to know about securing permits for the Half Dome hike: Permit Requirements: Permits are required seven days a week when the cables are up, limiting the number of hikers to 300 per day (approximately 225 day hikers and 75 backpackers) beyond the base of the subdome. Hikers must obtain permits via lottery, either through a preseason lottery in March or daily lotteries during the hiking season. Preseason Lottery: During the preseason lottery, 225 permits are available for each day, and the application period is from March 1 through March 31 (eastern time). Applicants can request up to six permits for up to seven dates, with results announced in mid-April. Daily Lottery: Approximately 50 permits are available each day during the hiking season through daily lotteries. The application period for the daily lottery is two days prior to the hiking date, with results announced late that night. The application period is from midnight to 1 pm Pacific time. Application Process: To apply for a permit, visit Recreation.gov or call 877/444-6777 (open from 7 am to 9 pm Pacific time). The application fee is $10 per application, charged at the time of submission. The second fee is $10 per person, charged upon receiving the permit. Fees: The first fee, $10 per application, is non-refundable and covers the processing costs. The second fee, $10 per person, is charged upon receiving the permit and pays for park rangers' services and safety information. The $10 fee is fully refundable if the permit is canceled or if the cables are not up on the date for which the permit is valid. Additional Information: For further inquiries, call 209/372-0826 (Monday-Friday, 9 am to noon and 1 pm to 4:30 pm).
