Ghost Forest (T26) Details

This is an example of a lodgepole pine forest that was killed by insects like the lodgepole needle miner moths and red-haired bark beetles. The lodgepole needle miner is one of the most destructive insect pests of lodgepole pines. The caterpillars of this small, inconspicuous moth feed within the pine needles. Under outbreak conditions they become so numerous that they destroy every needle on the lodgepole pine. Bark beetles' attacks often follow needle miner epidemics and kill the trees.
