El Capitan Moraine (V9) Details
A moraine is an accumulation of glacial debris (soil and rock). This moraine was formed as the last glacier retreated from Yosemite Valley and served as a dam to help form the ancient Lake Yosemite which extended 5.5 miles up the Valley from this point. Silt and sand eventually filled in the lake and formed the present valley floor, however, early visitors were welcomed by mosquito-ridden swamps due to moraines such as this impeding the flow of the Merced River. To learn more about the glaciers in Yosemite National Park, view the Yosemite Nature Notes video episode on YouTube.
